Built in 1063, this structure served as the largest medieval book depository in Armenia. Monks stored codices and manuscripts in deep vaulted niches carved directly into the stone walls. Look closely at the semi-columns to spot delicate carvings of birds and reptiles.

This 11th-century columned hall functioned as the main classroom for scholars. A continuous stone bench wraps around the walls where students once sat during their studies. You can sit on these same benches to experience the medieval academic environment.

Constructed in the 13th century, this three-story bell tower rises above the rest of the monastery. It is a prime example of later medieval Armenian architecture. Step outside to get the best perspective of the belfry and the complex's layout.
